In the territory of Baranello, in Contrada Coscia di Ponte, stands one of the best-preserved mills in Molise, among the few that have not been converted into hydroelectric power stations. Due to its historical, architectural, and ethno-anthropological significance, it was placed under the protection of the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts, and Landscape of Molise by ministerial decree on September 13, 1990. A decorated stone bears the date 1872, likely indicating a renovation, though records from the State Archives of Campobasso confirm the mill’s existence before that time.
Historically, along the Biferno River valley, milling and the production of felts for domestic use were thriving activities, carried out in numerous mills and fulling mills along the riverbanks. The ancient mill of Baranello remains a valuable witness to this productive past, preserving the memory of traditional craftsmanship and the deep connection between the territory and its natural resources.
