Rotello – The Castle of Rotello: From Impregnable Fortress to Ducal Palace

Loading...

The Castle of Rotello, also known as the Ducal Palace or Colavecchio Palace, is located in the oldest part of the town. In recent times, it belonged to the Colavecchio family.
There are no written records about its origins, but its current structure is the result of various renovations that transformed it from a defensive fortress into a noble residence, a fate shared by many castles in Molise.

he castle retains its massive walls and two historic entrances: one facing the main street and the other overlooking the rolling countryside towards Ururi and San Martino in Pensilis. In the past, it was surrounded by defensive walls and had a watchtower, now in poor condition. It marks the boundary of Rotello’s historic area, accessible through an arch that once served as the village’s main entrance.

Today, much of the original structure is hidden by surrounding houses. The façade, featuring pink plaster and reinforced with metal rods, reflects the ongoing transformations of the building. The northern section, lacking defensive towers, has a pointed shape, while the upper part is decorated with “romanelle,” small niches that welcome swallows in spring. Currently, the Ducal Palace of Rotello serves as a private residence, preserving its historical essence while adapting to modern life.
