Fornelli: The Castle-Village Between Towers and History

Loading...

The Castle of Fornelli is not a typical medieval fortress, but rather a fully fortified village! Houses, churches, and towers blend into a unique defensive system, once protected by ancient walls and a moat that made it virtually impregnable.

The well-preserved defensive walls date back to the Angevin period. The seven towers, characterized by a pronounced sloping base and a slender cylindrical neck, are connected by a patrol walkway, now known as Via Belvedere, offering breathtaking panoramic views. The village still follows its original 10th-century layout, with the Palazzo Vecchio (the center of civil power) and the Church of San Michele Arcangelo (the religious heart) strategically placed at the highest point, with pathways linking the entrance gates.

The origins of the castle are lost in time: during the Lombard era, a first defensive wall was likely built around the church, and its layout can still be traced along Via Marconi. Over time, the medieval fortress was transformed into a Marquis Palace, first by Andrea Carmignano, Marquis of Acquaviva, and later by his descendants Carlo and Alfonso in the early 18th century. Their coat of arms, depicting a rampant lion topped by a griffin, can still be seen on the main entrance to the village

As the palace expanded, it gradually incorporated parts of the Angevin walls—which were repurposed as dovecotes—and the village’s main gate. In 1832, the Carmignano family sold the estate to Ippolito Laurelli, who carried out the final modifications: an elevation near the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, the closure of the courtyard with a protective wall, and the construction of the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows, built to replace the Chapel of Our Lady of the Rosary, which was destroyed in the 1805 earthquake.

Today, the Marquis Palace of Fornelli is officially protected by the Archaeological and Artistic Heritage Departmen

of Molise, having been designated a historical site on February 28, 1993.

Fornelli is a place where history speaks through its stones and traditions, offering a journey through time in one of the most authentic and fascinating medieval villages of Italy.
