Opened in 2006, the Mysteries Museum is a must-visit for those who want to discover the genius of Paolo Saverio di Zinno and the extraordinary “machines” that animate the Corpus Domini Procession in Campobasso. With over 220,000 visitors, it is one of Molise’s most visited museums, housing an extensive collection of documents, photographs, and videos that tell the story of this fascinating tradition.
The “Mysteries” are unique scenic structures, consisting of a wooden base and an elaborate wrought iron frame. Children and adults, dressed as saints, angels, and devils, are attached to these structures in such a way that they appear to be floating in mid-air, creating a spectacular visual effect during the procession. The rhythmic movement of the bearers causes the structures to sway, making it seem as if the figures are hovering above the ground in an incredible play of optical illusions and masterful craftsmanship.
This tradition, which has lasted for over 250 years, showcases the skill of artisans who, through advanced techniques like iron boiling, have created structures that are both lightweight and incredibly durable. The Museum allows visitors to explore every detail of this ancient art, offering an immersive experience into the heart of Molise’s most authentic folklore.
