In the heart of Molise, at an altitude of 1200-1400 meters, lie the ruins of the Three Towers of Campochiaro, a rare example of a Samnite fortification with integrated towers. During Samnite and Roman times, the region was covered by a dense network of fortifications built with polygonal stonework, using large local stone blocks and walls up to 2.5 meters thick.
This strategic location enabled control over communication routes between Samnite centers, including Bojano, the capital of the Pentri, and the Italic Sanctuary of Hercules. It also defended the Pescasseroli-Candela sheep track and the routes connecting the Bojano plain to the southern Samnite territories.
Today, the Three Towers stand as a fascinating testament to ancient military engineering, offering visitors a journey through history, nature, and archaeology.
