A few kilometers from Campobasso, the small village of Ferrazzano houses an authentic medieval jewel: the Carafa Castle. This ancient fortress, built on a rock overlooking the valley, tells centuries of history and is an ideal destination for those seeking an atmosphere of times gone by.
The first evidence of the castle dates back to 1131, but it was only in 1498 that it took on its current appearance thanks to Geronimo Carafa, son of Alberico Carafa, Duke of Ariano. The important Neapolitan family chose Ferrazzano as a strategic location, taking advantage of the privileged position of the hill to control the surrounding lands. Little is known about previous eras, but the castle continues to convey the charm of its ancient origins.
Today the Carafa Castle is in an excellent state of preservation, with no trace of ruins. Access is via a stone bridge, built after the sixteenth-century restoration: once, in fact, there was a wooden drawbridge, operated by mighty chains.
Once inside, the visitor finds himself in front of two imposing stone towers and a small atrium with a well, added in later periods. In the courtyard, ancient heraldic shields stand out. Particularly significant is the one that unites the coat of arms of the Carafa family with that of Giovannella di Molise, wife of Geronimo, as a testimony to the noble alliances of the time.
Despite the numerous restorations that have partially transformed the interior, the castle retains its imposing appearance on the outside. Details such as the medieval loopholes, used for defense with culverins and bombards, still tell of its glorious past. The walls, over six meters thick in some places, are tangible proof of the solidity of the original construction.
Today, the Carafa Castle is not just a place to visit: it is also possible to stay inside. Several rooms are available, thus offering a unique experience: sleeping in a real medieval fortress, surrounded by the rolling hills of Molise.
Ferrazzano, with its castle and picturesque village, is a perfect destination for an alternative holiday, full of history, nature and authenticity.
