Santa Maria Assunta: in Ripalimosani a church that guards a treasure

In the heart of Ripalimosani stands the Mother Church “Santa Maria Assunta,” an authentic treasure chest of history and sacred art that recounts centuries of faith and culture.

Although it is not possible to establish with certainty the year of its final construction, parish records attest to the presence of the bell tower as early as 1463. The main facade, dating from the 1500s, majestically faces the square, while the ancient northeast wall represents the last remnant of the original 13th-century structure.

Of great value is the main 16th-century portal, accessible by four steps, whose setting and pomp recall the late Baroque taste, rich in volutes, scrolls, spirals and carved plant elements.

The solid wood doorway, adorned with numerous panels, is a true masterpiece. In the upper lunette stands out a high relief depicting the Madonna flanked by two adoring angels.

Along the side facades of the church and at the base of the bell tower, sculptures of different periods and styles, reused from pre-existing buildings, can be seen. Particularly fascinating is a figurative group that popular tradition identifies as Adam, Eve and the Devil.

Inside, the church is majestic with its three slender and elegant naves enriched by nine altars. The oldest is the one dedicated to the Epiphany celebrated for the fine workmanship of the inlays and polychrome marbles.

Also noteworthy are the 16th-century choir and pulpit supported by an eagle bearing the Ripalimosani coat of arms on its breast. Opposite the choir is a perfectly preserved organ from 1778.

Notable works of art include a painting by Scipione Cecere depicting “The Adoration of the Magi” and a wooden statue of St. Michael from the 1700s.

The real jewel, however, is a copy of the Holy Shroud, one of the earliest made and considered a relic by contact. This copy, displayed for public veneration in a painting, is the third in chronological order in existence.

The Mother Church “Santa Maria Assunta” is much more than a place of worship: it is a living heritage of faith, art and history that embellishes the village of Ripalimosani.
