Church of St. George: jewel of Romanesque art in Petrella Tifernina

Loading...

In the center of Petrella Tifernina, the monumental complex of San Giorgio Martire represents one of the most fascinating examples of Molisian Romanesque architecture. Part of an architectural “triptych” that includes Byzantine, Lombard and Romanesque remains, the church is a destination for scholars, art lovers and tourists.

Built between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, St. George Martyr shows a different stylistic development on the exterior and interior due to the long duration of works. The only record of its dating is the inscription in the lunette of the main portal. Despite fires and periods of closure, recent restorations have restored stylistic unity to the building, freeing it from post-18th-century additions.

The church, with a basilica plan without a transept, measures about 30 meters long by 15 meters wide. It is distinguished by its three apsidal naves, splayed single lancet windows, and exterior decoration with hanging arches and slender columns. The walls, supported by four-lobed pillars made of limestone, divide the nave from the side aisles, while the north-facing salient façade features a central window, an innovation introduced by local workers to replace the traditional rose window.

The interior, enriched by Lombard columns with a cruciform base, boasts capitals carved with great skill and variety of motifs: leaves, volutes, masks and human figures inspired by Apulian and Oriental models, filtered through local tradition. These elements make San Giorgio Martire unique in the Romanesque landscape of Molise.

Among the treasures kept, the Ducal Tomb located in the right aisle stands out, housing the remains of Antonio and Alfonso Carafa, the last feudal lords of Petrella. Above the tomb, a marble group made in 1763 by Muzio Carafa shows the family coat of arms surrounded by carved flags.

At 30 meters high and with 54 steps leading up to the belfry, San Giorgio Martire is for all intents and purposes one of the most impressive monuments in Molise. To visit this complex is to immerse oneself in a heritage of art, faith, and history that tells of the millennia-long interweaving of cultures that have passed through the territory.
