Church of San Silvestro: nestled among the rocks of Bagnoli del Trigno

In the heart of the ancient village of Bagnoli del Trigno, nestled between its rocks, stands the striking Church of San Silvestro Papa, a sacred building that combines history, spirituality and extraordinary integration with the natural landscape. Built between the 13th and 14th centuries, the church stands out for its unique position: it is literally set between two rocky spurs that hide part of its structure, leaving only the side walls visible. The bell tower, detached from the church, seems to rise from the bare rock.

The main entrance opens on the right side wall, facing the town. Here is the fine portal embellished with six small columns (three on each side) with different decorations: one smooth, one with a twisted motif, and one with a herringbone decoration. Each group ends with finely carved capitals featuring human faces framed by floral motifs. Above the portal, a semicircular lunette echoes the decorations of the columns and features a frame with a stylized plan that originates from the mouth of a human head and ends in an amphora.

One of the most iconic architectural elements is the bell tower, built on the rocky outcrop next to the apse. Its characteristic “onion-shaped” roof, made of colored majolica, makes it a recognizable symbol in the village landscape.

The interior of the church is divided into three naves. In the back wall is the chancel with a pipe organ, while along the right aisle is a wooden crucifix with jointed arms, used during Good Friday processions. Also in the same nave, a plaque commemorates the consecration of the church and the high altar by Bishop Alfonso Mariconda.

On the left, a chapel is dedicated to Our Lady Crowned. The church also houses the episcopal coat of arms of Pius Augustus Crivellari, bishop of Trivento from 1958 to 1966, which was once placed in the outer lunette of the portal.

The Church of San Silvestro represents a fascinating example of the fusion of art, faith and nature, making it a must-see for those visiting the most authentic Molise.
