In the heart of the village of Belmonte del Sannio stands the Church of the Holy Savior, an authentic treasure chest of sacred art and historical memory. The present structure dates back to 1865, rebuilt after damage caused by earthquakes in the 19th century thanks to the labor of Carlo da Pescopennataro. The building has a rectangular plan with a single nave, covered by a lunetted barrel vault, while the simple and harmonious gabled facade reflects a Renaissance-inspired style, with sober lines framed by essential moldings.
Inside, the neo-Baroque style dominates with elegance, enriched by elements from the original church. Two altars dedicated to St. Roch and the Immaculate Conception stand out, as well as the bust of the patron saint St. Anacleto, a refined 18th-century style work made in 1748 by Giovannitti of Oratino. The church also preserves valuable devotional statues depicting St. Rocco, St. Lucy and St. Anthony, expressions of a deep-rooted and living popular faith.
A particularly interesting item is the Painting of Our Lady of Belmonte, which testifies to the deep connection between the local community and that of San Paolo di Civitate in the province of Foggia. This relationship was born thanks to the practice of transhumance, which for centuries united the Belmontese shepherds to the Apulian lands. The shared cult of the Madonna of Belmonte is also narrated in the volume Il Campanile – Memorie Abruzzesi, a tangible sign of a devotion that transcends geographical boundaries.
Next to the church stands the imposing stone bell tower, rebuilt in 1681 as a plaque crucified on its facade recalls. Standing on a rocky outcrop and built in three orders, with the last one having a belfry open on all four sides, the bell tower is a visual landmark for the village. Its detached position from the church suggests an older origin, perhaps Lombard, with roots in times before the present construction.
The Church of the Most Holy Savior, with its rich artistic and spiritual heritage, is today an identity symbol for the community, a custodian of historical memory and religious traditions spanning the centuries.
