Forget everything you thought you knew about Molise—Larino is about to surprise you. Located in southern Frentani territory, this ancient town has been inhabited
since prehistoric times and has always been a crossroads between coast and hinterland.
At its peak between the 3rd and 1st century BC, Larinum stood out for its urban planning and even minted its own coins.Roman authors like Cicero mention it in the Pro Cluentio, describing a wealthy and politically turbulent city.
Today, Larino’s archaeological area tells the story of that golden age. The centerpiece? A well-preserved Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD—not on a natural slope like most, but partially dug and partially raised, a feat of Roman engineering. The structure is still impressive, with visible arches, steps, and access corridors (vomitoria).
Nearby, the thermal bathsreveal mosaics and a fascinating glimpse into Roman innovation. You can still spot the hypocaust system, with raised floors that once circulated warm air. From calidarium to frigidarium, it’s like walking through a living museum of ancient wellness.
Larino is where Molise meets Rome, in a place that’s grand without being crowded, and rich in history without losing its charm. Come for the ruins, stay for the stories.
