Walking along a tratturo is much more than a simple hike: it is a true journey through time, immersed in the nature and pastoral culture of Molise. The tratturi are ancient grassy paths, up to 111 meters wide, carved over centuries by herds during seasonal transhumance between Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, and Puglia. These “green highways” of the past connected mountain areas to the winter pastures of the Tavoliere plains in Puglia.
Today, walking a section of the Tratturo Magno or the Tratturo Celano–Foggia, for example, means rediscovering an unspoiled landscape made up of hills, plains, ancient villages, and profound silences. You follow the slow footsteps of history, passing by dry stone walls, rural fountains, abandoned farmhouses, and stone crosses that mark the way.
The walk along the tratturo is suitable for everyone: families, trekking enthusiasts, or curious travelers. It can be organized in short daily segments or as multi-day journeys. Along the route, you can taste local traditional products, meet shepherds, listen to stories of rural life, and discover an authentic Molise that remains largely untouched by mass tourism.
Ideal in spring and autumn, the walk offers simple yet deep emotions: the scent of grass, the sound of cowbells, and a slow, sustainable rhythm. It is an experience that combines nature, history, and identity, celebrating the roots of a land that still lives today under the sign of transhumance, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
