The Campochiaro Tower: medieval sentinel between mountains and sheep tracks

In the heart of Molise, immersed in the mountainous landscapes of Matese, stands the picturesque tower of Campochiaro, built in medieval times, which tells stories of defense, strategy and control of the territory. Built between the 9th and 10th century AD, this structure represented an important military garrison guarding the crossroads between the Matese and Pescasseroli-Candela tratturo, ancient transhumance routes used by shepherds to move flocks between Abruzzo and Puglia. Its primary function was to protect Bojano, at the time a very important administrative centre.

The fortress was not a castle inhabited by nobles, but a real watchtower and defense. Its structure, still partially preserved, shows typical characteristics of the fortifications of the time: a circular plan, walls in small stone blocks and a series of external rafters, Probably used to support wooden scaffolding or walkways. The building stands out for its elevated position, dominating the entire town of Campochiaro, which guaranteed a wide view on the surrounding area.

Around the tower there was an imposing wall, originally equipped with nine defensive towers. Today some of these towers are still visible, especially on the southern side, while those on the eastern side are more difficult to distinguish because of the dwellings built later. The main tower, known simply as “la Rocca”, is the best preserved and still well recognizable by the inhabitants and visitors.

The access to the tower is located on the opposite side of the escarpment, to protect against possible assaults, while two windows – one of which circular – overlook the village, offering a suggestive and timeless view. Even if it lacks decorative elements or architectural luxury, the Rocca di Campochiaro fascinates precisely for its essentiality and for the important historical role that it has played.

Today, visiting the Rock means taking a journey back in time, rediscovering the ancient ways of shepherds and the strategic ingenuity of a community that knew how to defend its lands. A little known place, but rich in history, to be included among the must-see destinations for lovers of the Middle Ages and Molise culture.
