Colletorto’s “Angevin Nights” is a historical re-enactment that takes place on August 11 and 12 and offers an authentic journey back in time to the 14th century. The event celebrates the figure of Queen Joan I of Anjou, who ascended the throne at only 17 years old and left significant traces in the village, including the tower that dominates the main square.
The first evening is dedicated to medieval games, including historic archery, crossbow tournaments and raffles, all accompanied by tastings of local specialties. The welcoming atmosphere, enhanced by the warm participation of the community, makes the experience even more engaging.
On August 12, the event gets into full swing. From 10 p.m., an impressive historical procession parades through the streets of the town, involving groups from outside the region as well. The route starts from the steps at the Monastery of St. Alphonsus of the Liguori and ends in the square at the foot of the tower. On the way, flag-wavers and the impressive “Palio delle Oche,” a traditional competition between two geese, entertain the audience.
Upon reaching the square, the Queen delivers her speech, which is greeted with solemn attention and acclamations. This is followed by parades in period dress, flag-waving performances and, to conclude, a spectacular burning of the castle, the climax of the two-day celebration.
Organized by the Giovanna I d’Anjou Historical Group, the re-enactment involves the entire town, strengthening the bond with one of the most significant figures in local and national history. An unmissable event for those who wish to immerse themselves in the magic of the Middle Ages and rediscover Colletorto’s historical roots.
