During the Carnival period, we are used to seeing masked parties or decorated floats. In Vinchiaturo, however, the most important tradition is the “Pezza de Casce”, a unique event that takes place in the alleys of the town. The event, which has over a hundred years of history, sees two teams challenge each other to roll a wheel of parmesan through the alleys of the town.

The name of the event comes from the main characteristic of the race: the wheel of cheese is thrown along the path and, when it disappears from sight, the opponents exclaim “j’è ceca!” to emphasize the disappearance of the wheel behind some curve or obstacle, often shouted even just as a joke.

The event is organized by the Pro Loco of Vinchiaturo and includes two competitions: a women’s one with a wheel of about 18 kg and a men’s one with a 30 kg wheel. A few years ago, a challenge between children was also introduced. The race starts near the parish church of Santa Croce and develops along a path full of curves and steps, amidst shouts like “Luàteve ca’ passa le casce!”.

The game is not only a challenge of skill, but also an opportunity for socializing and celebration, with moments of friendly contestation and verbal duels between the two teams, the Reds and the Greens. The referee, a central figure in the competition, must often intervene to quell discussions that arise after each shot.

The finish line is located in front of the Jacampo house, known as “the castle of Vinchiaturo”, where the last test consists of placing the cheese on an ancient stone slab while saying “A la ‘n ‘tutta!” to seal the victory.

The winning team gets the cheese, which is then shared with all the participants and spectators, transforming the event into a true community celebration.

The “Pezza de Casce” is much more than a simple race: it is a moment of aggregation and fun that represents the authentic spirit of the Molise Carnival. For those who want to participate, the event is open to all: ready to get involved?
