Mother Church of St. Peter in Chains

In the oldest part of Castellino del Biferno, nestled among
narrow alleys and timeless stone houses, stands the Mother Church of San Pietro in Vincoli. More than a church, this is the beating heart of the village—a place where centuries of devotion and artistry meet.

The church was rebuilt in the late 1700s after falling into
disrepair and expanded to three naves with a gracefully simple tripartite façade. Inside, the surprises continue: 13 statues grace the space—some crafted by Di Zinno, the renowned sculptor of Campobasso’s “Misteri”—along with a beautifully carved walnut choir from the 18th century and a solid stone baptismal font.

After the earthquake of 2002, the church had to close its doors. But thanks to careful restoration work, it was reopened in March 2013, once again becoming a place of worship and wonder. For travelers looking to connect with the lesser-known soul of Molise, this church offers not only history and architecture, but also a sense of peace and permanence.
