Carnival is a time loved by young and old alike, an opportunity to experience moments of merriment and light-heartedness. In Molise, many municipalities organize traditional events, including Ripalimosani, which celebrates this holiday with the Masquerade, known in local dialect as “A Meskuerate.”
This ancient tradition takes place in the streets of the town through comic skits and folk songs, entirely in dialect. The performances, called “poses,” tell stories of the community, alternating between moments of surprise and hilarity. Despite the cold weather, actors and spectators participate enthusiastically, following the development of the events with curiosity and involvement.
The Masquerade is not only an occasion for fun, but also a means of handing down memories of the past and re-enacting ancient customs. At the same time, it is renewed from year to year, incorporating modern elements and adapting to the times. This balance between tradition and innovation allows the event to remain alive and relevant.
In addition to comedy skits, the festival is accompanied by music and folk songs performed with traditional instruments. The result is an afternoon of lightheartedness and sharing that strengthens the sense of community and keeps the cultural roots of the village alive. The Ripalimosani Masquerade represents, therefore, a unique event, capable of uniting generations and giving smiles through the power of storytelling and folk music.
