In the heart of Guglionesi stands one of the most captivating churches in southern Molise: Santa Maria Maggiore, a true treasure trove of art and devotion. The current building dates back to 1746, rebuilt after several collapses and earthquakes, and it stands proudly with its Latin cross layout, 800 m2 surface, and impressive architecture.
Inside, visitors will find remarkable works: the main altar with a 1572 painting of the Assumption, the refined Altar of Saint Adamo featuring a large canvas by Bardellino, and a choir and pulpit carved in walnut wood, masterpieces of 18th-century craftsmanship. The silver statue of Saint Adamo, patron saint of Guglionesi, weighs 33 kg and was blessed by Pope Leo XIII.
Don’t miss the 1505 icon of the Assumption, displayed every August 15th, and the polychrome wooden altarpiece now under restoration. The true gem, however, lies underground: the Crypt of Saint Adamo. This Romanesque space, dating back to at least the 12th century, is supported by carved columns and capitals, and features Renaissance frescoes depicting scenes from the Old Testament, such as the Tower of Babel and the Flood.A sacred, dimly-lit space once used to house the Saint’s relics—a unique place for reflection and silence.
A must-see for lovers of sacred art and hidden gems in
authentic Molise.
