Every July 2, the Molise village of Cercemaggiore comes alive to celebrate Our Lady of Libera, patron saint of the Union of Municipalities of the Tammaro Valley. The day is marked by a rich religious and civil program that attracts thousands of believers and visitors from all over the territory.
The heart of the celebration is the evening procession, preceded by the evening evening Mass at the shrine. This is a particularly evocative moment, in which the statue of Our Lady is carried on the shoulders of women in traditional dress, a unique custom that makes the event even more exciting. The procession, about two kilometers long, is opened by religious and civil authorities, followed by a torrent of faithful. The echoes of prayers, chants and music accompany the route, thanks to an effective amplification network. Watching over the order and fluidity of the route are the “mazzieri,” historical figures recognizable by their long decorated sticks, used to signal and coordinate the march.
At the end of the procession, the community gathers in the square of the shrine for the Supplication to the Blessed Virgin, followed by a fireworks display that lights up the sky amid applause and commotion.
The civic program completes the experience with musical entertainment and live shows in the picturesque setting of Pianello, where a traditional fair also comes to life from the early morning hours. Among colorful stalls and rides for all ages, the “barracche” stand out: refreshment stands set up with long tables, where it is possible to taste the typical specialties of the festival, above all codfish with fried peppers.
The feast of Our Lady of Libera is confirmed every year as a not-to-be-missed event, capable of combining faith, tradition and community spirit in a unique and engaging atmosphere. A vivid example of how popular devotion can still bring entire territories together around a shared and deeply rooted sentiment.
