Bosco Corundoli

Just outside the Arbëreshë village of Montecilfone, nestled on the rolling hills of southern Molise, lies the Corundoli Forest—one of the most pristine, untouched, and ecologically rich green lungs in the region. Spanning an impressive 70 to 80 hectares atop a 345-meter-high chalky hill, this woodland is entirely cloaked in native broadleaf species that have flourished for centuries, preserving a unique natural balance.

The forest is predominantly composed of downy oak, Turkey oak, and holm oak—majestic trees that stand tall alongside an underbrush of shrubs such as hawthorn, blackthorn, and broom. These plant species are not only integral to the ecosystem’s stability but are also among the most effective natural producers of oxygen. Their coexistence creates a vibrant and complex habitat where a rich variety of fauna—colorful butterflies, beneficial insects, songbirds, and small mammals—live undisturbed in their natural rhythms.

Walking into Corundoli feels like stepping into a different world, one ruled entirely by the patient, timeless presence of nature. The silence is broken only by birdsong, the rustle of leaves, and the occasional call of distant wildlife. Well-marked trails offer gentle access for hikers and nature lovers, inviting visitors to lose themselves in the tranquility. For the more adventurous, the unmarked paths provide a chance to explore freely, discovering hidden glades and panoramic viewpoints.

As one of the last remaining hillside forests in the area, Corundoli represents a critical reservoir of biodiversity and a living archive of the region’s ecological history. Its importance is not only scientific but also cultural. For the people of Montecilfone—one of the four Molise towns of Arbëreshë heritage—the forest is a treasured symbol of environmental stewardship and a source of communal pride. Its preservation stands as a testament to the deep bond between the local community and the land they inhabit.
