Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo

The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo is a prominent example of Oratino’s religious and artistic heritage. Built in 1526 on the ruins of an earlier structure, it has undergone several changes over the centuries, including the addition of the choir and sacristy in 1691. Severely damaged by the 1805 earthquake, it was restored in 1909.

The façade is marked by a central curved pediment flanked by straight lines, while the square bell tower stands to the side. An internal staircase leads to the bell cell, topped by an octagonal drum and a spire.

Inside, the church features three naves separated by eight round and square columns supporting full archways. Ionic pilasters and stucco decorations enrich the space. The central nave’s vaulted ceiling showcases a remarkable fresco from 1791 by local artist Ciriaco Brunetti, depicting the Assumption of the Virgin. Other notable artworks include a 1945 painting by Trivisonno and two statues by Colombo.

Flooded by natural light from eight windows, the church offers a serene and historical atmosphere, standing as a cultural landmark in the Molise region.
