Touching the Stars – Astronomical Observatory of San Pietro Avellana

Loading...

Nestled at 1350 meters above sea level between the municipalities of San Pietro Avellana and Capracotta, the Astronomical Observatory offers one of the clearest skies in central Italy. Far from city lights, it’s a haven for stargazers and a must-visit destination for anyone fascinated by the cosmos.

The facility features a 4-meter dome and a 40 cm Ritchey-Chrétien telescope – the same design used in space telescopes. Here, visitors can enjoy live observations of the night sky, including planets, galaxies, and nebulae, alongside expert-led projections and explanations.

The observatory organizes educational visits, including planetarium sessions and real-time telescope imagery. It welcomes school groups, families, astronomy enthusiasts, and curious travelers.

Booking is required through the Province of Isernia (tel. +39 0865 4411).

Whether you’re a budding astronomer or simply enchanted by the stars, this observatory offers a unique opportunity to gaze deep into space from one of Italy’s most pristine natural settings.
