Vastogirardi: between village and history in uncontaminated nature

Vastogirardi, a castle-village nestled in the hills of Alto Molise, welcomes visitors with a scenic staircase and a large portal. The castle, which dominates the town, contains the church, the houses and the ancient noble residence, creating a suggestive architectural unicum.

The name of the village derives from “Vasto” (rock) and perhaps from “Girardi”, referring to a crusader named Giraldo. Already documented in the 13th century as “Castrum Girardi”, the town has its origins in the 8th century, a period to which the defensive walls also date back.

The historic center develops around the castle, with the Church of San Nicola, dating back to the 15th century, characterized by a side entrance. In the surrounding area, elegant historic buildings and the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie stand out. To the north of the town is an important archaeological site: an Italic temple from the 2nd century BC, evidence of the Samnite presence.

Vastogirardi is immersed in nature, between the municipal forest, the M.A.B. Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo Reserve and the sources of the Trigno river, offering a suggestive and uncontaminated landscape.

Since 1911, the village has hosted the Sacred Representation of “Il Volo dell’Angelo” (flight of the angel), one of the most fascinating traditions of Molise. Every year, a four-six year old girl, dressed as an angel, walks suspended on a steel cable between the balcony of a house and the church opposite, in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The festival is accompanied by events and food stands in Vittorio Emanuele’s square.

Among the most anticipated events is also the ‘cazzarieglie e fagioli’ festival, a traditional dish recognized by the Italian Academy of Cuisine. This pasta, prepared with water and flour and with an elongated shape, is served with beans during the festival at the end of August in the courtyard of the medieval castle.

Thanks to its historical, natural and cultural heritage, Vastogirardi represents one of the pearls of Alto Molise, ideal for those seeking history, tradition and breathtaking landscapes.
