St. George’s Church is the oldest in Campobasso, dating back to the 10th century, and is dedicated to the city’s patron saint. Built over an ancient Samnite temple dedicated to Hercules, the church has undergone several transformations. Originally a single nave, a Byzantine-style chapel was added in 1326, and in the 15th century, noble families financed the construction of side naves. In the 18th century, the interior was enriched with gilded stucco decorations.
The church was at the heart of city life and witnessed fierce rivalries between two brotherhoods, the Crusaders and the Trinitarians. Perched near the top of the hill, it offers a breathtaking view of Campobasso and the surrounding mountains, from the Matese to the Maiella. The façade is simple, featuring a relief of the Crucified Lamb above the portal and a small rose window.
Inside, a 14th-century chapel with a dome boasts frescoes depicting St. Augustine and other saints. St. George officially became the patron saint of Campobasso in 1661 after a miracle was recognized by the Church. One of the church’s most intriguing elements is the tombstone of Delicata Civerra, a noble girl who tragically died in 1587 due to a forbidden love, a story reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet.
