The hermitage of Santa Maria dell’Altopede in Longano: a place of worship surrounded by nature

Nestled in the beautiful setting of the Monte Patalecchia Regional Nature Reserve and the Lorda and Longaniello streams, the Church of Santa Maria Altopede is one of the most striking wonders between nature and faith.

This small rock sanctuary, carved into the rock, offers a visiting experience that is also suitable for families with children. The path leading to the church is easy, but it is recommended to tackle it in small groups to best observe the details of the landscape: the church itself, the ruins of the ancient castle, a waterfall, and amazing wildlife that animates this pristine corner. Safety is key, as is slowness to truly savor every moment.

The origins of the Church of Santa Maria Altopede are lost in time. The date of its construction is not known with certainty, but historical sources tell that in 1761 Prince Caracciolo of Pettoranello requested the celebration of 88 festive masses on September 8, the day of the Nativity of Mary. This figure testifies to the strong devotion that surrounded the place. The hermitage was part of a larger complex, as evidenced by the remains of the castle not far away.

The name “Altopede” comes from a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, made of olive wood, found right here. The statue, probably dating back to the 13th century, is now kept in Isernia Cathedral. Every year, on September 8, a traditional walking procession of about six kilometers brings the statue back to its place of origin, evoking the ancient spiritual connection with the hermitage. According to tradition, Our Lady appeared in a tall tree near the Longaniello stream.

Today only part of the original structure remains of the church, but its charm remains intact. Within the walls there is an atmosphere of deep silence: inside, among the niches carved into the rock, there are small paintings of saints and evidence of popular devotion, such as songs dedicated to the Madonna. During the visit, you may happen to meet some unexpected guests, such as the owl that still inhabits these ancient and evocative places.

An excursion to the Church of Santa Maria Altopede is not just a nature walk, but a true journey through time and spirituality, discovering an authentic and surprising Molise.
