In the enchanting mountain village of Pescopennataro, known for its majestic fir forests and panoramic views, there’s a hidden gem that tells stories older than the village itself: the Chiara Marinelli Civic Museum of Stone
It is not just any museum, but a place where a passion for archaeology and a love for the land come together in an intimate and authentic narrative.
This collection was lovingly curated by Pietro Patriarca, originally from Agnone, and his wife Fortuna Ciavolino.Together, they assembled and arranged the exhibits and educational materials, turning their passion into a cultural gift to the community.
The artifacts, many discovered in the Rio Verde area of Alto Molise, include tools from the Lower Paleolithic, beautifully
crafted Neolithic objects, unique ornaments, and small idols that reveal a surprisingly refined prehistoric culture.
Among the most poetic pieces is a nativity scene made from natural stones, shaped not by hand but by water and time. Each stone “suggests” a figure from the Christmas story—a moving blend of nature and tradition.
The museum is dedicated to Chiara Marinelli, the couple’s beloved niece who passed away young. Her memory adds emotional depth to a place already rich in meaning and legacy.
A visit to this museum is more than archaeology—it’s a journey into Molise’s ancient soul, told through stone, memory, and the quiet determination of those who believe in preserving history from the ground up.
