The Matese, a mountain rich in water, trees, plants, flowers, peaks soaring into the sky and very deep abysses. It is also rich, however, in animals, from the smallest to the largest.
It is in this unspoiled natural setting that the WWF Guardiaregia-Campochiaro Oasis, the largest in peninsular Italy, is located. Inside is the Oasis headquarters and dedicated trails, but that’s not all. In this corner of paradise, in fact, stands the deer wildlife area.
Opened in 2014, the Campochiaro deer wildlife area, located in Fonte Litania, covers 9 hectares and offers an ideal habitat for these magnificent ungulates. Within the facility, the deer have ample natural spaces, as well as feeders, drinking troughs and a large latrine constantly supplied with water, thus ensuring optimal conditions for their well-being.
Animal observation is made possible thanks to two large, perfectly camouflaged outdoor observatories, which allow visitors to admire the deer without disturbing them. The entire area is surrounded by an attractive nature trail, enhanced by numerous information panels illustrating the biology, behavior and ecological role of this species.
The wildlife area also features an equipped picnic area, ideal for a break surrounded by nature. Completing the facility is the “Deer Visitor Center,” which includes a classroom, laboratory, equipment storage and restrooms, making it a focal point for educational and research activities.
In addition to its educational function, the Campochiaro Wildlife Area plays an important role in the conservation of the species, representing a first concrete step toward the future reintroduction of deer in the Matese territory.
Are you ready to immerse yourself in nature and safely admire these magnificent animals up close?
