The Pro Loco of San Pietro d’Avellana, also known as Ad Volana, is passionately dedicated to enhancing and preserving the rich historical, cultural, and natural heritage of this charming town in Molise. Located about 30 miles from Campobasso, within the Diocese of Montecassino, San Pietro d’Avellana is a village of 917 inhabitants with a millennia-old history. The association works to keep local traditions alive and promote events that celebrate the town’s deep roots and unique identity.
The village is renowned for its Monastery of San Pietro d’Avellana, founded in 1027 by Count Oderisio Borrello, who endowed it with numerous fiefs and lands. The monastery stands as a symbol of an era when local lords—often with violent pasts—sought redemption by establishing religious institutions. It was later entrusted to the Abbey of Montecassino, playing an important role in the religious and cultural life of the region.
Beyond its historical landmarks, San Pietro d’Avellana is surrounded by pristine nature, with forests, hiking trails, and picturesque chapels. Through guided walks, cultural events, and various initiatives, the Pro Loco invites both visitors and locals to discover—or rediscover—the history, culture, and folklore of this corner of Molise, where past and present meet in a landscape rich in tradition and natural beauty.
