On May 31, Campobasso celebrates the Infiorata, an event deeply rooted in local tradition that pays homage to the Madonna dei Monti. This recurrence is particularly felt by the inhabitants of the historic center, where the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, located on Campobasso’s “mountains” in front of Monforte Castle, holds the venerated statue of the Madonna.
From morning, the alleys of the center are transformed into a riot of colors and scents. Residents create beautiful floral carpets along the processional route, using petals, grass and coffee grounds to outline the darker details. These ephemeral works become an integral part of the celebration as only the procession has the privilege of stepping on them.
Devotion to Our Lady of the Mountains has over time enriched the procession with new elements, including the Infiorata, which is now one of the most scenic aspects of the festival. The origins of this tradition date back to the arrival of Capuchin friars at the church of Santa Maria Maggiore. In 1905, the bishop of Bojano-Campobasso entrusted them with the sacred building, which underwent a massive restoration. The work was completed in 1911, and on May 30 of that year, the renovated church was inaugurated. The following morning, the statue of Our Lady was carried in procession through the streets of the city, thus beginning a tradition that still closes the month of May with a major religious and community event.
The day ends in a festive atmosphere with fireworks displays, sealing a moment of strong popular and spiritual participation.
