The fire of the castle of Termoli, which takes place every night of Ferragosto, is one of the most anticipated events in the city of Molise. This spectacular historical reenactment attracts a large audience every year, fascinated by the games of lights, music and colors that transform the castle into a suggestive fireworks display.

The event commemorates the Turkish attack of August 2, 1566, when the Ottoman fleet led by Pialì Pascià attacked the city. This attack was part of a broader strategy: the Turks aimed to conquer the Tremiti Islands and, to prevent any help, they sacked and burned the coastal towns from Pescara to Puglia.

Despite the sturdy walls of Termoli, the city was vulnerable due to the damage suffered by previous earthquakes. With about 200 galleys, the Ottomans landed and devastated the village, destroying buildings and starting fires, including a particularly serious one that hit the Cathedral. Many citizens were taken prisoner, while others managed to escape by taking refuge in the countryside between Termoli and Guglionesi.

Near these areas there was a Capuchin convent and the sanctuary of the Madonna della Vittoria, where the survivors found protection. For years, the tragic event was remembered with popular representations and even today the pilgrimage to the church of the Madonna a Lungo bears witness to the historical memory of the community.

The burning of the castle of Termoli is not only a spectacular celebration, but also a way to keep alive the memory of a past of resistance and rebirth, strengthening the historical and cultural identity of the city.
