In the heart of the Volturno Valley, in Montaquila, the “Sagra della Frittata” is celebrated every May, an event that has paid homage to local traditions, culture and Molise folklore since 1981. The absolute star of the event is the Maxi Frittata, prepared with more than a thousand eggs and getting bigger year after year. In 2024 there were as many as 1985 eggs for preparation.
The custom of the “Easter omelet” has its roots in local tradition, when families in the village would prepare omelets in the springtime to share with neighbors or offer them to those in need. The festival was born to celebrate this custom and to enhance the typical products of the area, such as eggs, cured meats, oil and native herbs.
During the event, in addition to the maxi frittata, families prepare smaller versions, from 51 to 101 eggs, which are offered to the community. In the afternoon, the large omelet is carried in a procession through the streets of the village, accompanied by figurants in traditional dress and folk groups from Molise and elsewhere.
The festival is not only a gastronomic occasion, but also an opportunity to rediscover the area and its traditions. The program offers numerous side activities, such as conferences, folk dance stages, workshops, photo contests, trekking and horseback riding. There are also rallies of vintage cars and wasps, as well as world music concerts with nationally renowned artists.
The aim of the event is to keep traditions alive and pass them on to new generations, strengthening the link between the past and the future. Although some editions have been suspended in recent years, the Frittata Festival will return stronger than ever, ready to provide excitement and celebrate Molise’s springtime with its rich cultural heritage.
