In the heart of Molise’s August, among religious events and folk traditions, a unique festival that combines devotion and gastronomy stands out: the Gildone Peppers Devotion. Every August 15, for more than a century, the community has gathered at the rural church of Santa Maria in Quadrano to celebrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with a tradition as tasty as it is heartfelt.
The day begins with a solemn mass, but the real star is the sandwich with fried green peppers, known locally as friarielli.. Participants can enjoy it by leaving a free offering, thus contributing to the atmosphere of sharing and spirituality that animates the event. Every year, to feed the hundreds of people who participate, about seven quintals of peppers are prepared and more than five quintals of bread consumed, all fried in about a quintal of oil.
But preparations begin as early as August 14, when from the crack of dawn volunteers, men and women from the village, head to the church to fry the peppers in large pots. It is a time of collaboration, commitment and passion, made even more challenging by the summer temperatures and working alongside the boiling oil.
The festival continues throughout the day on the 15th with food stands, music, picnics in a picnic area and an evening concert, turning a moment of faith into a true collective celebration. The event is renewed on August 22 in honor of St. Lucy, with a second distribution of sandwiches and the religious procession.
All this is made possible thanks to the tireless work of the August 15-22 Peppers Devotion Committee, the parish of Santa Maria a Quadrano and the active participation of the citizens of Gildone. A festival that, while rooted in popular religiosity, has become over time a must-attend event for the entire community and neighboring towns, capable of uniting faith, tradition and conviviality under the unmistakable scent of fried peppers.
