Christmas brings with it unique emotions, including living nativity scenes, traditions that involve entire villages. In Molise, the living nativity scene of San Polo Matese stands out for its longevity and authenticity, so much so that it has given the town the title of “Town of the Nativity Scene”.

Since 1982, every 26 and 27 December, the streets of the village at the foot of the Matese are transformed into an evocative setting of ancient Palestine, attracting numerous visitors. The idea was born from the parish priest Angelo Spina and since then the representation has never stopped, thanks to the commitment of around 140 participants. Over time, the nativity scene has been enriched with new details, scenographic effects and new routes.

The event comes to life already in the afternoon, when tourists and curious people begin to crowd the town. It is advisable to arrive early to buy the ticket, as admissions are limited to ensure an immersive and orderly experience. The official opening takes place around 5:30 pm, when darkness falls and the lights of the village, together with the bonfires, create a magical atmosphere. One of the most evocative moments is the lighting of the large shooting star on the mountain in front of the village.

The route begins from the church of Sant’Antonio, accompanied by the figures. Along the way there are ten main scenes:

  • The engagement of Mary and Joseph
  • The engagement of Mary and Joseph
  • Cleaning the spelt
  • Synagogue
  • The Annunciation
  • Elizabeth’s house
  • Joseph’s dream
  • The market
  • Herod and the census (Church of San Pietro)
  • Inn

Finally, in the highest part of the village, near the medieval tower, you reach the Nativity: the stable with the Baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, the animals and the Three Wise Men.

In addition to the evocative scenes, the route is enriched by refreshment points with typical local products, offering visitors a complete experience of history, culture and gastronomy.

The living nativity scene of San Polo Matese is a journey through time, an event that unites faith and tradition, capable of involving adults and children in a unique and evocative atmosphere.
