On an early summer evening, the village of Castellino del Biferno comes alive with the Pizzicantò, a festival in honor of St. Anthony of Padua, celebrated June 12 with enthusiasm and participation.
The main event is the spectacular display of human pyramids, a symbol of the tradition. Each tower, composed of thirteen people, represents the graces dispensed by the saint. The typical structure has three levels: seven people at the base, four on the second floor, and two at the top. In the center of the pyramid stands a pole to which the “pizzicantari” cling, contributing to the stability of the formation. The human towers then parade through the streets of the village amid singing and cheering.
After the spectacular parade, the festivities continue with the festival of “sagnitelle,” a traditional local dish. This pasta, strictly handmade by volunteers, is topped with “liar’s broth,” a tasty preparation of “càscë e ovë,” or meatless meatballs made of cheese and eggs.
In addition to the human pyramids and the food festival, the festival includes other characteristic elements. The “Spùlch” are small altars decorated with broom branches, a symbolic flower in the tradition, set up in honor of the saint. Large fires are also lit in the streets of the village, illuminating the festive night and creating an evocative atmosphere. Another significant element is the pagnottelle, offered free to participants as a sign of sharing and devotion.
An indispensable moment is the preparatory chanting for the formation of the human pyramids. Without this traditional intonation, the Pizzicantò cannot officially begin. The music, combined with the enthusiasm of the community, makes the event even more engaging and evocative.
Castellino del Biferno’s Pizzicantò is not just a religious celebration, but an opportunity to strengthen a sense of community and pass on centuries-old customs. The combination of spectacle, tradition, faith and conviviality makes this festival a unique event, capable of attracting visitors fascinated by the energy and authenticity of a ritual that is renewed every year.
