There is one night in Molise when fire becomes living memory, a collective ritual, celebration, and rebirth. It’s the Night of Fires in Venafro, held every March, when nine towering bonfires light up the heart of the historic center, scattered through alleys, squares, and open spaces.
Once, these fires were known as favor’ r’ San Giesepp’, lit by local youth in honor of Saint Joseph, protector of the poor and of fathers. But behind the devotion lies something older: a pagan, agricultural rite tied to spring and the purification of the land.
Today, each neighborhood builds and tends to its own fire with care and pride, blending competition, tradition, and deep connection to heritage. Around the fires unfolds a festival that goes beyond spectacle: concerts, markets, poetry readings, guided tours, performances, and social initiatives—especially those addressing gender-based violence.
It’s not just wood that burns—it’s a flame of identity that endures. As smoke rises over rooftops and traditional music mixes with the voices of thousands of visitors, one feels part of something genuine, powerful, and timeless.
If there’s a place where the soul of Molise reveals itself—through dance, story, and flame—it’s here, among the glowing embers of an unforgettable night.
