Campomarino: village, murals and Arbëreshë culture a stone's throw from the sea

Campomarino is located on a gentle hill near the sea, characterized by a medieval village that developed around the central church. Together with Ururi, Portocannone and Montecilfone, it preserves the Arbëreshë heritage, dating back to the arrival of the Albanians in Molise after the Turkish invasion. Its ancient name was Kemarini.

It is part of the Molise coast with Montenero di Bisaccia, Petacciato and Termoli. Campomarino Lido offers well-equipped tourist facilities, making it an ideal destination for a summer stay.

Archaeological finds indicate that the area was inhabited since the Bronze Age, with a settlement found not far from the town center. In addition to the documented history, a legend attributes the founding of the town to Diomede, the Homeric hero who, having settled in the area with his wife, daughter of King Dauno, was buried in the Tremiti Islands, called Diomedee for this reason.

The village maintains its medieval appearance with the Church of Santa Maria a Mare, built in smooth gray stone and characterized by Romanesque architecture. Originally it had three naves, now reduced to two. Of particular interest is the 12th-century crypt, accessible via a staircase in the left nave, which preserves a 15th-century fresco. Nearby is the Ramitelli Tower, a defensive structure, and a prehistoric settlement near the sea. In the Ramitelli district there is a former military airport built by the Americans during the Second World War.

A short distance from the sea is the C.E.A. Le Fantine, an area rich in flora and fauna. Also not to be missed are the murals by Liliana Corfiati in the center of the village, depicting sacred images and scenes of daily life.

The local cuisine is linked to the sea, with “zuppa di pesce con fagioli” as a typical dish. Other specialties include “cipollata” and excellent fruits such as watermelons and grapes, used to produce an excellent wine.

The main events are concentrated in the summer, but in recent years the “Palio delle oche” has been reinstated, taking place in the month of April.
