Castel del Giudice is a charming medieval village in Alto Molise, located 800 meters above sea level, on the border with Abruzzo. Crossed by the Sangro River, known for its abundance of fish and uncontaminated territory, it is the ideal destination for those seeking relaxation and contact with nature in every season.
The history of the village is marked by the destruction suffered during the Second World War, which made it difficult to reconstruct its origins. However, it is known that in 1267 Corradino di Svevia granted the fief to Corrado D’Antiochia. In the 15th century it became the residence of the Giacomo Caldora, and then passed to the Carafa and D’Alessandro families.
Among the artistic treasures, a processional cross in gilded copper stands out, from the period before the Romanesque, kept in the parish house. Also of great value is the processional cross from the 14th-15th century kept in the church of San Nicola. Just outside the town is the Sanctuary of the Madonna in Saletta, a place of devotion.
In recent years it has risen to prominence for numerous projects that have involved the entire town, such as the Borgotufi scattered hotel, in which numerous abandoned houses and stables have been renovated, the apple orchard, the brewery and the community apiary.
Popular traditions are a distinctive element of the town. Among the most heartfelt is “La Maggiolata”, celebrated on May 1st, when groups of young people in traditional dress go through the town singing and collecting food offered by the inhabitants, culminating in a collective celebration in the square. Also important are the celebrations of San Nicola, with the distribution of “pagnotte”, and those of San Rocco and the Madonna in Saletta, in September.
The gastronomy is rich in authentic flavors. A typical dish is the “pallotte”, meatballs made of bread, cheese and eggs, created as a cheap alternative to meatballs. So popular that they have a dedicated festival, which is being held this evening!
Cultural and folkloristic events enliven the village throughout the year. Buskers Festival, a street artists festival, has become an unmissable summer event in Molise. The Apple Festival celebrates the local apple orchard, becoming a symbol of the bond between the territory and its agricultural traditions. With its mix of history, nature, traditions and flavors, Castel del Giudice represents a fascinating destination for those who want to rediscover the charm of Italian villages.
