Castel San Vincenzo: history and mountains are reflected in a turquoise lake

In the heart of the Volturno Valley, Castel San Vincenzo is a medieval village perched on a hill, overlooking a picturesque turquoise lake and the imposing Mainarde Mountains. The village was founded between the 10th and 11th centuries with the founding of the castra of Castellone and San Vincenzo, which arose to protect the lands of the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno. Castellone became an important administrative and economic center of the Upper Volturno Valley until the official merger of the two villages in 1928.

Strolling through the historic center, one can admire the churches of Santo Stefano and San Martino Vescovo, as well as elegant buildings such as the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Ex Conti-Regina and the ancient castle Palazzo de Jorio-Frisari. Of particular interest is the “Oscar Caporaso” Museum, dedicated to Apennine flora and fauna.

A short walk from the town, the Abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno represents an important historical testimony. Founded in the 1700s by the Benevento nobles Paldo, Tato and Taso, the abbey grew in influence and prestige. Its most precious jewel is the Crypt of Epiphanius, decorated with extraordinary frescoes and discovered accidentally by a farmer.

Nature lovers can explore the Volturno Falls and the small church of Madonna delle Grazie, set in unspoiled scenery. An excursion not to be missed is to the hermitage of San Michele a Foce, a small shrine carved into the rock from which there are breathtaking views of the town and lake.

The lake of Castel San Vincenzo is a true natural jewel, perfect for relaxing or enjoying outdoor activities. Throughout the year, the village comes alive with religious and folk fairs and events celebrating local traditions. The gastronomy offers genuine flavors, with typical dishes such as roast lamb and kid, accompanied by excellent local cheeses.

Between history, culture and natural beauty, Castel San Vincenzo is a fascinating destination that provides an authentic and unforgettable experience.
