Castelpizzuto, nestled in the green Matese Mountains, is a charming village with breathtaking scenery, streams and a medieval historic center characterized by stone houses with roofs unique in Molise. Founded by the Angevins in 1269, the town rose around a strategic stronghold. Over the centuries it passed to several noble families, including the Gaetani, Pandone and Capece Galeota families. After a period of aggregation to Sant’Agapito in 1807, it regained autonomy in 1815.
The unspoiled natural environment is one of its main attractions, with coniferous and coppice forests providing a perfect refuge for nature lovers. The oligomineral spring “La Folgara” is an important resource, with an upcoming project to build a spa dedicated to wellness.
Notable architectural features include the Baronial Palace, which still retains a circular medieval tower overlooking a courtyard. The 16th-century Church of St. Agatha is notable for its simplicity and the presence of an ancient inscription on the lintel. Under the square in front of it were once the castle’s granaries.
One of the most curious traditions of Castelpizzuto was the feast of St. Dominic the Abbot in which the statue of the saint was covered with snakes. The custom ceased in the 1920s following an accident. The celebration dates back to 1888, introduced by archpriest Bonaventura Caranci, who was miraculously visited by the saint. At one time, on the eve of the feast, the Opera di San Domenico, a play about the saint’s life, was staged.
Other popular religious holidays include those in honor of St. Agatha (Feb. 5), St. Anne (July 26) and St. Lucy (first Sunday in September).
Local cuisine offers traditional peasant dishes such as spelt and wheat soup, “l’acquaonta” (whole wheat flour dough with water and sauce), “mbaniccia” (vegetable and bread pizza), as well as polenta, sausage and typical goat and sheep cheeses.
Despite the scarcity of services, Castelpizzuto offers an authentic experience, where history and nature intertwine in a unique atmosphere, making it an attractive destination for those seeking relaxation and genuine traditions.
