Filignano: one village, many hamlets among history, nature and music

Filignano, nestled in the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, is a small town that offers spectacular views of the Mainarde Mountains, an unspoiled natural environment and a rich historical and cultural heritage. Divided into thirteen districts, the town boasts origins before the year 1000, as attested by ancient Lombard fortifications. Known initially as “Fundiliano,” in the Middle Ages it became “Fondeniano” and came under the rule of the Pellegrino, Montaquila and Caracciolo families.

The surrounding nature, characterized by lush forests and wildlife, makes Filignano an ideal place for hiking and relaxation. Near the hamlet of Cerasuolo lies the striking Mainarde forest, rich in vegetation and populated by ancient dry-stone structures, tholos, used by farmers as shelters. The village is also renowned for its dry-stone walls, so much so that it has promoted the candidacy of the Stones Park in the National Register of Rural Landscapes.

Prominent among Filignano’s peculiarities is the Varvarusa Golf Club, founded in 1998 thanks to the initiative of some returning emigrants from Scotland, Germany and Canada. Excursions in the area allow visitors to immerse themselves in an atmosphere of peace, pure air and silence, ideal for those seeking authentic contact with nature.

The town’s artistic and religious heritage includes the church of San Pasquale Baylon, built in the 18th century and enlarged in 1844 at the behest of Duke Pasquale Marotta, located in the hamlet of Cerasuolo. In the center of the town is the church of the Santissima Immacolata Concezione, while in the surrounding districts stand the church of the SS. Crocifisso and that of the Madonna del Morzone in Selvone.

Important historical evidence is preserved in the Combat Road museum, located in Cerasuolo, where a group of enthusiasts collects and preserves artifacts from the world wars.

Local gastronomy reflects Molise’s traditions, with typical dishes such as “abbuoti” (lamb innards rolls), polenta with vegetables, and crespelle.

Cultural events include the Mario Lanza Festival, an event held every August since 1990 to celebrate the famous tenor of Filignanesi origins. A not-to-be-missed event for lovers of opera and the Italian musical tradition.
