Guglionesi is a charming town in the first hinterland of Molise, located on a gentle hill about 370 meters above sea level, which offers a 360-degree panoramic view. From here you can admire the majesty of the Majella mountains, the Tremiti islands and the Gargano, as well as the Biferno valley that extends towards the Adriatic Sea. This strategic position makes it a place where history, nature and traditions blend harmoniously.
The origins of Guglionesi date back to the 5th century BC, when a group of fugitives, fleeing the destruction of Usconium, founded the settlement. Over the centuries, the town has seen the passage of various dominations: the Normans, the Lombards and numerous noble families, among which the d’Avalos stand out. In the 9th century, the Saracen raids marked a moment of crisis, leaving evidence of a turbulent but historically rich past.
Among the artistic and architectural wonders, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore represents a jewel, built in 1746 on the remains of an ancient Romanesque structure, which has known numerous moments of ruin and rebirth. Its interior is embellished with refined stuccos and an altar made of polychrome marble, a symbol of the local sacred tradition. From the Romanesque era, the crypt dedicated to Sant’Adamo Abate, characterized by a rectangular plan, ornate columns and round arches, still retains the charm of the past. No less important is the church of San Nicola which, with its crypt and the valuable painting on the high altar, bears witness to the rich artistic heritage of the village. In the heart of the historic center are also the Palazzo dei Caracciolo and the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie which houses a painting of the Immaculate Conception, probably the work of Giordano.
To complete the picture, the local gastronomy offers delicacies such as salami and ventricina, accompanied by a wine with a robust and mellow character.
Popular traditions enliven the life of the town: on Good Friday the streets are lit up with flares, the feast of the patron saint Sant’Adamo involves the entire community with the procession on a decorated cart pulled by oxen, and the Palio di San Nicola and the Giostra degli Anelli enliven the summer period on 7 and 8 August. Guglionesi is therefore a place where art, history and traditions coexist in a unique and fascinating combination, which makes it special.
