Larino, the ancient capital of the Frentani and later a Roman municipium, is a historical and cultural jewel of Molise. Its origins date back to before the founding of Rome, as attested by stone inscriptions found there. Destroyed by the Romans and rebuilt as Larinum, it reached its peak between the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C., with its own mint. In 1303 it was hit by an earthquake and later invaded by the Saracens, later passing under the rule of Normans, Swabians and noble families such as the Carafa.
Prominent among its monuments is the Cathedral of San Pardo, with a Gothic facade of rough stone, a magnificent thirteen-ray rose window, and a bell tower dating from 1451. The three-aisled interior contains works by Solimena, Giordano, Jouvenet, and Ribera. Other places of interest include the churches of Santo Stefano, Santa Maria della Pietà, and San Francesco, as well as the Ducal Palace, home to the library and the Civic Museum. One kilometer from the center are the ruins of ancient Larinum, with houses, villas and an amphitheater near the Villa Zappone Archaeological Park.
Larino’s traditions are alive and fascinating. Among the most important, the procession of San Pardo (May 25-27) is notable for its parade of ox-drawn floats decorated with crepe paper flowers. Larino Carnival, among the best-known in Molise and recognized as one of Italy’s historic carnivals, features floats that mock politics, entertainment and current events.
Another heartfelt tradition is the Tavolata di San Giuseppe, widespread in several towns in Molise, with banquets welcoming guests and offering thirteen typical dishes. During the Christmas season, the village is illuminated with striking musical illuminations, making the atmosphere even more magical. Finally, the October Fair, established in the 1700s, is a must-attend event for the community.
The local gastronomy offers specialties such as “maccheroni di San Giuseppe,” “caragnoli” and “càveciune,” typical sweets related to the holidays.
