Macchiagodena: terrace on Matese and a castle to enjoy the view

Macchiagodena, a charming village in the province of Isernia, rises halfway up the mountains of Molise, with an extraordinary view of the Matese mountain range. Rich in history, art and culture, the town offers visitors a unique heritage, demonstrated by the mighty castle and its traditions.

The first historical information about Macchiagodena dates back to 1269, when Charles I of Anjou assigned the fief to the French knight Barrasio di Barrasio. During the Lombard period, the village was a strategic position between the counties of Bojano and Isernia due to its favorable position for controlling the territory. Over time, the fief passed to various noble families, including the Cantelmo, Pandone, Gaetani and Del Tufo.

The Castle of Macchiagodena, located on a limestone rock block, originally had a defensive function along the Pescasseroli-Candela sheep track. Damaged by seismic events, it was restored over time. The structure has circular towers and internal halls with frescoed vaults, as well as an art gallery with works by Marcello Scarano and a library containing ancient texts, including the Divine Comedy commented by Vellutello.

The historic center develops around the castle with stately buildings, characteristic alleys and an eighteenth-century fountain decorated with masks and a Romanesque lion. Among the places of worship, the church of San Nicola di Bari, the ancient convent of the Holy Spirit (1692) and the chapel of the Madonna della Palestrina, a destination for walks, stand out. The surrounding area offers vast wooded areas on the mountain that protects the village from winter winds and the Biferno valley, ideal for excursions. On the mountain there is also an archaeological site in the Vallefredda area, covered after the excavations concluded in 2009.

Macchiagodena keeps its traditions alive, especially in the celebrations related to weddings, threshing and patronal festivals, animated by festivals and dances. Among the most evocative events is the ritual of the kidnapping of the bride, accompanied by the preparation of polenta with ham, sausage and bacon, and the “tuzzaculo” dance. The festivals allow you to taste typical dishes such as polenta and beans, cheeses and local wines. Particularly renowned is the “Sagra della polenta”, which takes place in the enchanting setting of the Caporio district.

Macchiagodena therefore represents an unmissable destination for those who wish to discover history, culture and traditions in a landscape of rare beauty.
