Monacilioni: a village that resists between stories and countryside

Molise is, unfortunately, characterized by a high risk of landslides, with several municipalities affected, including Monacilioni.

The history of Monacilioni is shrouded in mystery, but it is estimated that the village originated in the 12th century with the name of “Castro Monachi Leonis”, probably in reference to a small church dedicated to San Leone. Over the centuries, the town has changed its name several times, taking on names such as “Monacilionis”, “Monceglione” and, finally, “Monaciliuni”.

Located on a buttress of Mount Serrazasilla, the historic center of Monacilioni features typical medieval architecture. Among the places of interest is the Chapel of Santa Reparata, where the relics of Santa Benedetta, which arrived from Rome in the 18th century, are preserved.

Monacilioni is, as anticipated, sadly famous for its landslides, the most significant of which occurred in 1961, radically transforming the town. The “case spallete”, as the inhabitants call them, have become a distinctive symbol of the community, marking the border between the inhabited areas and the collapsed ones.

Another element of great importance is the former church of Santa Maria Assunta, also known as the “old church”. This structure, dating back to 1200, has a Latin cross plan and is distinguished by its three naves, as well as having a bell tower of considerable height, which makes it an important local architectural heritage.

From a cultural point of view, Monacilioni celebrates some significant festivities. Among these, the “sagra della soppressata” is a very popular event, dedicated to a typical salami of the area, which is held at the end of May in conjunction with the feast of Santa Benedetta, the patron saint of the town. Another important festival is the “sagra dei Mezzetti”, celebrated in honor of San Rocco, on the day of the patron saint’s feast.

In short, Monacilioni is a municipality that, despite the challenges related to landslides, preserves a rich history and living traditions, representing an interesting point of reference in the Molise region.
