Montagano, thanks to its position, offers splendid views of the Biferno valley and the surrounding villages. Walking through its alleys, you can take a journey through history admiring palaces, churches and architectural features. The name “Montagano” probably derives from ancient Greek, meaning “beautiful mountain”. The origins of the town date back to 1039, when the princes of Benevento, Pandolfo and Landolfo, declared the independence of the municipality through the “Montaganese Parchment”. The nomination of Montagano as a municipality is confirmed by an inscription in the floor of the church of Santa Maria a Faifoli. Between the 17th and 18th centuries the town experienced a period of agricultural prosperity thanks to the initiative of the parish priest Damiano Petrone who instructed the “sinners” to plant trees as a form of penance, thus contributing to the rebirth of the countryside.
At the entrance to the town, two lions welcome visitors, while the old town is characterized by white limestone houses and the bell tower of the church of Santa Maria Assunta. Among the noble structures, Palazzo Tagliaferri, the old castle, stands out, with the Chapel of Santa Filomena annexed. The Church of Sant’Antonio di Padova is also worth a visit.
Outside the town center is the Badia di Santa Maria in Faifoli, restored by Pietro da Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V, in 1276. Founded by the Benedictines before the 12th century, it has a Gothic portal from 1263 and an interior with three naves with a unique wooden statue of the Madonna.
In the hamlet of Collerotondo, the castle of Montagano, built in the 12th century and fortified by Frederick of Aragon in 1456, today appears as a stately palace. The “La Difesa” forest has a fascinating history linked to bandits and wayfarers. Nearby is also an ancient snow house.
Montagano’s gastronomy is based on typical ingredients, especially tomatoes, renowned throughout the region and the protagonist of an event held at the end of August. Typical dishes include “tacconi”, macaroni similar to fusilli, accompanied by tomatoes, basil and pecorino cheese. Cavatelli, pasta and beans, soppressate and local Moscato wine are also not lacking, making every meal a delicious experience. In addition, the polyphonic choir, the band and the local drama company enliven the cultural life of the village with concerts and performances.
