Morrone del Sannio: the spy that from the Biferno valley controls all of Molise

Perched on high ground overlooking the Biferno River valley, Morrone del Sannio is known as the “peephole of Molise” for its extraordinary panoramic location. The village offers breathtaking views ranging from the Matese mountains to the sea, with the Tremiti Islands visible on clear days.

Its origins date back to Roman times, as evidenced by the surrounding walls, coins, towers and tombstones found. However, the sheep-track that crosses the territory indicates an even earlier frequentation. Over the centuries, Morrone del Sannio was a fief of several families: Giuliano di Castropignano in Norman times, Bartolomeo di Capua under the Angevins and finally the Di Sangro family with the end of feudalism.

Following the 2002 earthquake, the town was extensively renovated, retaining the charm of its stone alleys and manicured houses. Highlights include the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses valuable wooden works, including a statue of Columbus and a Gothic-style composition. Suggestive is the cloister of the convent of San Nazario, while the abbey of Santa Maria in Casalpiano, restored after the devastating earthquake of 1456, preserves archaeological finds from Roman times including a rustic villa.

In addition to its historical and architectural heritage, Morrone del Sannio is renowned for its culinary traditions and specialties. Among the typical dishes is “cetillo,” a wild carrot boiled, fried and macerated in cooked must, then seasoned with vinegar. The procession in honor of the Assumption is an event deeply felt by the community, involving all the inhabitants in a celebration of deep devotion.

With its mix of history, nature and traditions, Morrone del Sannio is a must-see destination for those who wish to discover the authentic charm of Molise.
