Petacciato, a charming village on the Molise coast, overlooks the Adriatic offering breathtaking views. Sharing the coast with Termoli, Campomarino and Montenero di Bisaccia, this town combines history, architecture and nature.
The origins of Petacciato date back to Civita Potatius, the name by which it was known in the past. Over the centuries, the village has suffered several attacks, including those of Corrado Lupo in the 15th century and of the Caldora troops, who decimated the population.
One of the main monuments is the church of San Rocco, dating back to the 12th century. The building is distinguished by its columns with cubic capitals, the quadrangular bell tower decorated with small arches and a three-nave crypt, supported by low columns with sculpted capitals. In the historic center there is also a medieval castle, characterized by a square plan and an ancient drawbridge.
Going down towards the sea, you come across the Tower of Petacciato, part of the coastal defense system built by Charles V in the 16th century to protect the coast from Turkish raids. In the past it communicated with other towers along the coast, but today it is a ruin in need of restoration. The coast of Petacciato is also enriched by one of the most evocative dune systems in the Adriatic and by a vast protected pine forest. On the beach there are particular dunes characterized by the presence of flowers that can adapt to difficult environmental conditions such as wind and salinity. The dunes also offer important ecological services, such as the protection of the areas behind them and the control of coastal erosion. This habitat has been recognized as a Site of Community Importance (SCI) within the Natura 2000 Network, making Petacciato an ideal place to enjoy nature and beauty. The local gastronomic tradition enhances the flavors of the sea, with dishes based on very fresh fish. Among the specialties, “U’ pappone” stands out, a fish and bread soup typical of the village.
Summer in Petacciato is lively thanks to events and demonstrations that animate the town, especially in August, attracting visitors with traditional shows and celebrations.
Petacciato is therefore an ideal destination for those seeking a perfect balance between history, nature and gastronomic culture, all immersed in an authentic and evocative atmosphere.
