Roccamandolfi, nestled between the mountains of the Molise Apennines, emerges only at the last stretch of the road, offering a suggestive panorama. Reachable via winding paths, the village offers a fascinating mix of history and nature.
Of particular historical importance is its role in brigandage, so much so that it has earned the nickname “Homeland of the brigands”. The town is dominated by the remains of the medieval castle, once known as Rocca Maginulfo, refuge of Ruggiero and Tommaso di Molise before its destruction by Frederick II. The fiefdom passed from the Normans to the Angevins and, subsequently, to various families until it was purchased by the Pignatelli family in the 16th century.
Among the main attractions is the Tibetan bridge, immersed in uncontaminated nature, ideal for those seeking strong emotions. In the town, the church of San Giacomo Maggiore stands out, with its 18th-century altar and a wooden statue by Di Zinno, and the 15th-century road cross. Also worth a visit are the museum of traditional costumes, among the most beautiful in the region, and the museum of nativity scenes with examples from all over the world.
The symbol of the brigand past of the village is the statue of the brigand, located near the brigandage museum. The latter offers an engaging experience thanks to various exhibition rooms and a 3D video on the history of the phenomenon.
The surrounding nature is another jewel in the crown of Roccamandolfi. Among the natural beauties are the Rio waterfall and Monte Miletto (2050 m above sea level), the highest peak of the Matese that falls within the municipal territory. Campitello di Roccamandolfi, on the other hand, is a perfect destination for picnics and excursions, both in summer and winter. From the peaks of the Matese it is possible to admire both the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas, with their islands.
The town is also animated by numerous events and traditions. Among the most important are “Rocka in Musica”, a summer festival dedicated to music, the “Gnoccata” in honor of San Giacomo on July 25, the “Festa del Pastore”, the “Sagra del Cinghiale” and the snail festival, perfect occasions to taste local specialties.
Roccamandolfi, with its history, its landscapes and its traditions, represents an ideal destination for those seeking an authentic experience between culture and nature.
