Sant'Angelo del Pesco: village, nature and a hermitage in the rock

Sant’Angelo del Pesco is located at 805 m above sea level in the upper Molise, overlooking the middle Sangro Valley and bordering Abruzzo via the Sangro River. Surrounded by nature, the town offers suggestive excursions in the woods, with particular emphasis on the forest of silver firs.

Its history dates back to the year 1000, when a group of inhabitants of Pescopennataro settled in the area called Sant’Angelo in Grifone. The current name appears in 1300, while until 1861 the town depended administratively on Pescopennataro, from which the name “del Pesco” derives. During the Second World War, being located along the Gustav Line, it was almost completely destroyed by German bombings. The subsequent reconstruction respected the original urban layout.

In the town center stands the parish church, built in 1886 and dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo, patron saint of the town. Of particular interest is its majestic bell tower. Outside the center is the church of the Vergine del Carmelo, dating back to the 18th century, preceded by a scenic scissor staircase.

Immersed in the woods, the Eremo di San Luca is one of the most evocative hermitages carved into the rock, flanked by a small church. From the hermitage you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Sangro Valley and the nearby fir forest. Tradition has it that the inhabitants of Sant’Angelo allowed their neighbors from Pescopennataro to build the hermitage, since the latter did not have a patron saint.

The main holidays include the celebration of August 15 and the patronal feast of San Michele Arcangelo on September 29. Other religious celebrations are the procession of San Rocco on August 16 and that of Good Friday. Christmas takes on a unique charm with the large fire lit at the foot of the steps of the church of San Michele, which burns for days.

On August 13th, the traditional Festival of polenta with beans and pork fat, called “fascarellata”, takes place. Since 2016, the “Tumbr Fest” has also been held, a folkloristic event that celebrates local customs and traditions. The typical dish of Sant’Angelo is frascatello, prepared with potatoes cooked in salted water, corn flour, beans, pork rinds and chili pepper. This specialty is the protagonist of the summer festival, which attracts numerous visitors and keeps the gastronomic identity of the village alive.
