Sant’Angelo Limosano: village, views and the Pope of the “great refusal”

Sant’Angelo Limosano, nestled in the heart of Molise at 900 meters above sea level, offers extraordinary views that range from the mountains to the Tremiti Islands.

The origins of the village are uncertain, but it is known that it was once the fortress of nearby Limosano. Its development was influenced by Cardinal Vincenzo Maria Orsini, who promoted various initiatives during his pastoral visits. The town claims the birth of Pope Celestine V, known as the Pope of the “Great Refusal”, although the dispute with Isernia over his origins is still open. Sant’Angelo Limosano was also the birthplace of the inventor Alessio Marone, known for the electromagnetic-chemical telegraph and the Maltese cross tubular bridges.

Among the main attractions are the churches of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo and San Pier Celestino, the latter transformed into a granary in 1695 by Cardinal Orsini. The “Fonte di San Pietro” is suggestive, whose water begins to flow a few days before the feast of the Saint, on May 19th. The castle, albeit in ruins, and the characteristic ramp that identifies the village dominate the landscape.

Two kilometers from the village, along the road to Salcito, is the Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Stelle, built following the discovery of a Marian statuette on January 3, 1926.

Sant’Angelo Limosano is animated by two main festivities that attract the people of Sant’Angelo from all over Italy and abroad: the celebration of San Pier Celestino and the Madonna delle Stelle. Another highly anticipated event is the “Pezzate e fasciuole” festival on August 18th, an opportunity to celebrate the summer and the return of emigrants, enjoying typical dishes such as pizza al riso, cacchione, sfring and pizza fragrante.
